Once you know that the most important rule of thumb with this plant is to ensure it does not sit in soil that is overly moist, then the work of growing it is easy. If its rosettes begin to develop in an elongated manner, reaching toward the sun, then move it to a location where it will get more sunlight. (It is a sun-lover.) It makes a carefree ground cover which can tolerate gritty and thin soils, with fertilizer being unnecessary.

Finally, it has arrived... the first ever Sempervivum, or Hen and Chicks, with such attractive golden and red-kissed foliage. This plant is bound to get lots of attention. Its fleshy leaves which are tipped in red change to bright green in summer. They become gold with red tips in fall and red in the midst of winter. It is hardy to Zone 4 and will keep the colors coming until it is covered in snow. Grow in well-drained soil and full sun.
