Leptinella squalida, Platt's Black, Brass Buttons is native to New Zealand. This mat-forming perennial spreads indefinitely by rhizomes, creating the perfect ground cover. Foliage will take some foot traffic. It produces button-like flowers in early summer, followed by fruit. Neither flowers nor fruit are particularly showy. Instead, this one is prized for its foliage. Leaves are fernlike and oval-shaped. Needs full sun to partial shade. This plant is intolerant of dry soils and drought. It prefers acidic, rich soils. Propagate by division in the spring and/or fall.
