Contrary to its name, the Ice Plant fares very well in hot, dry conditions. It tolerates sun, heat, and drought, although it would prefer regular moisture. Its soil can be gravelly and not-very-rich; what is key is good drainage. Fertilizing can be done in autumn, and beyond that, not much is needed. This plant is very self-sufficient. It is deer tolerant.

It can handle all sorts of unfavorable conditions and still do well. Gardeners love it, even for sparce xeriscapes. It looks equally appropriate placed here and there in a more traditional garden, or grouped with other Ice Plants to create a dramatic display.
