Planting a Miniature Garden on a Snowy Day
As I glance up from working at my computer, I am surprised to see large, white snowflakes falling from the sky. It is beautiful outside. This is the first snow fall of the season. I am fortunate to have a window by my desk, because my view looks out onto the forest. The lush green of the evergreen trees is complemented by the peacefulness of the fluffy flakes of snow. Wouldn’t this view from my window be a good theme for a miniature garden?
First I have to start with a forest. Realize I am saying the word “forest” with a smile, because in mini gardening terms I am referring to a miniature tree and some plants. Depending upon the miniatures tree I pick, the background color of green could be the shaded green of a Dwarf Spruce Tree, the bright crisp green evident in the Lemon Cypress Cone Tree, or the crayon box green of a Juniper. The scene from my window has a dark background, so I will select the dark green color of the Spruce with Corsican Stonecrop planted in the foreground. Once the plants are in the tin square container, I need to think about ground cover.
Mini pebble in a light color to create a pathway and Moss Mat will work well to provide a cover for the soil. I like the look, but some accessories are needed in this miniature garden. What are my choices? Fairy cottages, benches, chairs, tables, fairies or animals are some ideas. My final decision is to place the Lucky Lutyens Bench in front of the greenery with fairy sayings pillows accenting the bench. Next comes the fun! Instant decorative snow called, Snow Real, will resemble the fluffy snowflakes that are covering the ground outside. A simple, but peaceful miniature garden design.
