Flower Tower: The Perfect Fairy Garden Addition to Your Front Porch

I am the current owner of a front porch with an empty section. It has a DIY cement block bench with a homemade pad my mom sewed, a hanging miniature garden, and a giant empty space on the other side of my front door. Since the area is so shadowed - I have yet to have a single plant survive very long in that area – I searched for planning miniature garden tips. In a recent gardening class I took with my sister, I was introduced to the beauty of moss that grows in particularly shady areas. Of course, that led me to a unique idea - we need to create an eye catching gardening experience that will fill that space and include some greenery as well as a mini fairy garden.

I wanted something that was interesting to look at as well as tall enough and wide enough to fill up that space. I came across the idea for a Flower Tower – where I could stack three traditional flowerpots on top of one another as they continue to get smaller and smaller as they go up. A vertical tower adds tiers that catches the eye and draws the eye upward. In addition, I might place fairy garden ladders extending from pot to pot, so that it could look as though the homes are connected, this will add a little more personality. Next, I would add a fairy door to each pot so that the pots themselves look like the homes and then the area left over in front of the doors would be the main yard of the miniature homes. This will give me an opportunity to plant some moss that will add a grass like effect and then I could dress up the space with miniature accessories so that each tier is different.  Connecting the theme throughout the entire miniature space, could give each layer a different personality depending on the playfulness I want to show throughout this fairy garden project.

When I shared my idea with a co-worker, she was anxious to try creating a Flower Tower. After rummaging through her stash of miniature garden accessories and metal containers, she came up with a Halloween idea to display during the colder days of October. Preserved Reindeer Moss was used as the ground cover on top of the soil. Next, it was time for some spooky fun to celebrate the Halloween season! She decorated the containers by adding Twilight the Witch, some spiders, and a wheelbarrow full of seasonal gourds. It is true no Halloween display is complete without a few bats flying around. Topping the tower was a twig bench with a black crow commanding the spotlight. The final haunting touch to the miniature garden was the addition of partially burned candles.

The Flower Tower, as a project, will be a fun way to dress up your front porch or any shady area of your yard. When creating a special miniature fairy garden, remember - “Moss is small flowerless plants that typically grow in dense green clumps or mats, often in damp or shady locations.” Whenever you are looking to improve a spot in your yard where you are not familiar with the plants that would grow there, you should attempt to reach out to your local greenhouse and ask a few questions. They are always happy to help.
