Shade Garden

Made for the Shade

Considered by some to be the number one selling perennial plant...Hostas.  They are truly a spectacular foliage plant with some varieties producing gorgeous blooms and nice fragrances.  Morning sun or dappled light promotes good leaf color and flower production.  Hostas can make a dull, shady portion of your yard or garden become an elegant, low-maintenance landscape that will look inviting from spring through fall.

There are literally hundreds of varieties to choose from, each with its own unique size, color and leaf shape.  Hostas come in many sizes.  Be sure to know the mature size when planting and leave adequate space between each plant.  Young plants will benefit with a layer of mulch to keep the roots moist and to minimize weed growth.  Most hostas flower from mid to late summer.  After the flowers have bloomed and faded, cutting off the spent stalks will keep the plants looking fresh.  Deer and slugs love hosta leaves.  Be sure to treat your hostas with foliar spray or powder to help prevent deer and slug damage.

Hostas are some of the most popular landscape plants for shade and can be paired with other shade plants such as Ajuga, Astilbe, Carex, Ferns and Heuchera.  All of our new hostas and old favorites are listed in our on-line catalog

 Hosta of the Year...
Rainbow's End

The Winner for 2021......

The American Hosta Growers Association has announced the Hosta of the Year: 'Rainbow's End'. A small, mounding hosta, 11" in height by a 21" width, that is difficult to pass up with its shiny green and yellow variegated foliage.  The very thick dark green leaves have a flared center pattern.  The bright yellow center turns white by summer and the showy red scapes produce pale lavender flowers in late summer.  A beautiful and bright hosta for part shade to shade that will get noticed!  Note:  due to grower/supplier production, this hosta will be availabe in July this season.

See you soon!
