The Truth About Tomatoes

Tomatoes are by far, the most grown fruit during the summer months.  Even if you don't have a garden, you probably have a container on your deck or patio that is designated for growing these tasty treats!  There are salsa tomatoes, salad tomatoes and tomatoes grown for canning, the options are virtually endless.  Here are a few tips to keep in mind when planting tomatoes:  1) Plant deeper than the pot/ground level.  You can plant up to the bottom leaves.  2) Once the plant has reached three feet tall, remove some of the bottom leaves, they are prone to fungal problems.  As the leaves turn yellow, remove and discard.  3) Keep moist and never let dry out.  Allowing the plant to dry out can cause a lot of problems, especially blossom-end rot.  Mulch tomato plants well to help retain moisture.  4) Fertilize with a fertilizer made especially for tomatoes.  These fertilizers have a higher level of phosphorus- the "middle number".  5) Indeterminate tomatoes are vines that continue to grow throughout the season and will produce fruit until frost.  Determinate tomatoes tend to ripen their fruit in a short period of time. Be sure to give tomatoes a lot of sunlight! It's no surprise that tomatoes are the most consumed fruit in the world, since they're a dietary staple for millions of us.
