Castanospermum Lucky Bean

Houseplant Highlight:  Castanospermum - Australian Chestnut Tree

Remember the dusty artificial Ficus tree or that wilting hanging plant at your grandmother's house?  Real, meaning live, houseplants are so on trend right now and are an easy way to add style to your home or office. The Castanospermum, "Lucky Bean Plant" or "Australian Chestnut Tree" as it is sometimes referred to, is an ideal indoor plant.  Related to the Sensitive Plant, Lucky Bean can grow tall and stately reaching four to six feet high in a large container.  This unusual plant sprouts from large green seeds that sit on the surface of the soil and provide nutrients for the leaves and stems while the plant is young.  It is an attractive evergreen plant that combines the dark shiney leaves of the tree and the uniqueness of the giant seeds. Potted, it can be placed outdoors during the warm months of spring and summer and taken inside again before the first frost.  Provide it with plenty of bright indirect light with a few hours of early or late day direct sun.  The leaves and seeds are toxic, so please keep the plant away from pets and little children. Try your skill with this easy to grow "Lucky Bean" plant!
