The Future Gardeners

Investing in the future and our kids has always been one of our top priorities. This year we have decided to raise the bar, and will be starting a Young Gardener's Club called 'The Sprouts', for the youngest among us. Click here for more details.

In addition to the Sprout's gatherings during the summer we are proud to introduce Emily Stone, who will be taking us on a "Wood Wide Web" tour on July 29th.

Getting the Kids to Tour the Garden

Another way we hope to create an interest in the garden is with a treasure hunt. A fairy garden has popped up in a hidden and secluded place in the display garden at the greenhouse, and all kids will be invited to an adventure treasure hunt to help locate it. There will be treasure maps at the checkout counters.

The practical foodie movement

What's Trending this Year?

Some trends are ephemeral and some are always with us - just more or less visible. The trends we see these days are more of the latter. Growing your own food, being part of the whole foodie movement of being a true food adventure seeker and appreciating the beauty of food are all good examples of old standards that are resurfacing.

Color of the Year

The Pantone Color of 2017 is Greenery. What more appropriate color for us gardeners is there than that? Whether you want to describe it as Kermit, Kelly or Kale green, it is a fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring. In the words of the color experts from the Pantone Institute 'Greenery is the color of hopefulness, and of our connection to nature. It speaks to what we call the 're' words: regenerate, refresh, revitalize, renew. Every spring we enter a new cycle and new shoots come from the ground. It is something life affirming to look forward to.' Nicely put!

Perennial Plant of the Year 2017

The Perennial Plant Association's 2017 Perennial Plant of the Year is Asclepias tuberosa. It is called Butterfly Plant for good reasons. The butterflies and hummingbirds love it and plants of this family are the only plants that Monarch larvae will eat. So support the Monarchs and keep planting these!
