| Tips... |
Planting in spring or fall Many perennials, trees, and shrubs establish themselves better when planted in the fall. Not to mention that early autumn is a very pleasant time to be outside. From a plant's point of view, it's almost foolish not to plant in the fall! The soil is as warm as it's going to get, inviting roots to stretch out and settle in. And because the plant doesn't need to make more top growth, it uses all its energy and the food it accumulates into making a bigger root system. The weather is ideal for establishing plants. The air is cool, so the leaves hold more moisture. The days are shorter and the sun is lower in the sky, so its rays are not as harsh. It's raining more than in the summer, but without the beating storms of the previous months. All the plant needs to do is to establish its root system, and slip into dormancy. Come next April your new perennials, trees, and shrubs will put on a growth spurt that a spring-planted companion can't begin to match! Fertilizing in fall Trees and shrubs should be fertilized in fall. They keep absorbing and growing even long into November. Perennials should not be fertilized. They start to shut down in September when the first frost hits them. |
