We look forward to the 4th of July like the rest of the country and will, as usual, be participating in the parade down Main Street of Winter. Our theme this year is ??????

Tips...

If you want more and repeated blooms on your plants, then remember to remove the dead or spent flowers - commonly referred to as Dead-heading.
There are several reasons for this important technique:

  • It improves the appearance of your plants to remove wilted or brown flowers (as with Irises and Daylilies).
  • It keeps invasive perennials from self-seeding, which can be a nuisance (some types of Ornamental Onions, Malvas, and Mullein are know for this).
  • It gives a signal to the plant that it has to make a new flower in order to reproduce.

The following varieties reward you with a second flush of blooms if you shear them back after their first flowering period: Achillea, Anthemis, Campanula, Chrysanthemum (Shasta Daisy), Coreopsis, Delphinium, Gaillardia, Myosotis scorp.(Water garden Forget me Not), Nepeta, Monarda, Penstemon, Phlox maculata and paniculata, Salvia, Scabiosa, Trollius, Verbascum and Veronica.

Some plants get leggy during the growing season - for example Geraniums, and many of the spring-blooming rock garden plants like Arabis, Iberis, Creeping Phlox, and Creeping Veronicas, etc. Don't be afraid to give them a 'hair-cut'! They will come back with a fresh new growth of leaves and sometimes more blooms.

Keep in mind that the seed-heads of some plants look very attractive and add to the diversity of the landscape - for example, Pulsatilla and Clematis. Varieties like Rudbeckia, Echinacea, Echinops and some of the Ornamental Grasses look especially nice during fall and winter. They also attract birds, like finches and chickadees.
