Coming Up...

Mother's Day is almost here and we are repeating our 10% off sale on all hanging baskets. We have dozens of people coming in looking for a last minute Mother's Day idea, like a beautiful hanging basket that lasts through the summer. It is always a safe bet as a gift. We also try to have several smaller planters available so kids have a chance to pick out something that isn't too costly to give to their mum.

Tips...

Now is a good time to go out and check on those perennials that are known to heave or slightly pop right out of the soil. Not all perennials do this, but Heuchera (Coralbells) along with Scabiosa (Pin Cushion Flower), Shasta Daisies, Blanket Flower (Gaillardia), Pigsqueak (Bergenia), Foamflower (Tiarella), Garden Mum (Chrysanthemum), and Painted Daisy (Tanacetum) are all somewhat susceptible.

What happens when they pop up is that it can break the roots of the plant and leave its root ball exposed to dry, cold air. Making sure the soil is well drained by amending it with compost, and also mulching a bit more carefully around those particular plants, can usually solve the problem.

If heaving is evident in your garden, simply press the soil back in place and cover the area with a thick layer of leaves or mulch. Leaves are especially effective as they trap a lot of insulating air and allow the soil to breathe. What works best for us is just to dig them up and replant deeper, adding some fresh soil if needed.

Remember that the purpose of the mulching is to prevent cycles of freezing and thawing. It is expected at this time of year that soils will be frozen. Mulching simply keeps the soil frozen in order to prevent the heaving associated with freeze/thaw cycles.

Keep those thumbs green!
