Winter Greenhouse is one of the largest retail greenhouses, nurseries and garden centers in Northern Wisconsin. Our aim is to provide the highest quality plants, most unique products, and best possible service, while continuing to develop the long-standing relationship of trust that our customers have placed in us. We are constantly striving to keep up with modern improvements and to offer the newest products on the market.

The Greenhouse started over 25 years ago with a group of Danish, German and Canadian immigrants. In the beginning there were some years of commuting daily to the town of Ladysmith during the spring season in order to sell bedding plants. Side by side they built up a large selection of hardy perennials and nursery stock, along with unusual and interesting annuals, herbs, vegetables, and more. With the development of many display gardens and an increasing number of greenhouses over the years, they carved out a destination in the middle of the Northwoods. Now it is enjoyed by plant lovers coming from far and near throughout the seasons.

The Greenhouse has collected a selection of hardy perennials that includes over 1000 varieties, the largest in the northern part of the state. We also offer one of the widest assortments of annuals, roses, herbs, water plants, exotics, and wildflowers. The nursery area contains a large selection of trees and shrubs, hardy to our area, including evergreens, ornamental & fruit trees, small fruits, flowering shrubs and climbing vines. Our staff is skilled and focused on helping you find exactly what you want and getting the results you need.

One of the biggest attractions we have is our well-established display gardens. Our main garden takes you through full sun to full shade areas, as well as rock garden, groundcover and herb sections. The center island bed contains a bog bed area and waterfall which cascades down into a full-sized pond where you can watch the fish swim and frogs sunbathe.

Numerous paths lead you through the woodland garden where you will find a large collection of mature hostas, as well as hundreds of other shade-loving perennials, grasses, shrubs and wildflowers.

We use mostly plants that are tried-and-true for this area in our gardens, but we also like to experiment with new varieties to test their hardiness and vigor.

We pride ourselves in producing thousands of different combination planters and hanging baskets, ranging in size from 8" to 36" for sun and shade, and utilizing a variety of plants. Our selection includes huge moss baskets overflowing with Proven Winner annuals, herb planters, water gardens, and mixed planters containing annuals and perennials, grasses or tropical plants. New for this year we will have various sizes of 'Miniature or Fairy Gardens'. We have special seasonal planters from Mothers Day through Fall. Currently, there are seven greenhouses to browse through, each one specializing in different plant types. There is one for bedding plants, one for perennials, a house containing vegetables and herbs, and one just for geraniums, fuchsias, begonias and other larger annuals. There is also one for tropical plants, houseplants, and specialty annuals. In between each greenhouse there are also tables filled with roses, hostas, grasses and wildflowers, as well as ever-changing displays of plants, pots and merchandise.

You will find a waterfall and indoor pond where you can enjoy watching the fish swim. There is also a large variety of water and bog plants to choose from for your water garden at home.

In our newly remodeled gift shop you will find a wide assortment of unique, high quality merchandise for home, patio, yard and garden.

There is also a place to sit overlooking the display gardens and enjoy a light refreshment or snack.

In a separate area you will find a variety of plant aids to prevent or eliminate problems with disease, insects, or critters. We also carry a complete selection of soil amendments, including organic fertilizer and compost.

On the patio you will find attractive displays of colorful pottery, plants and mixed containers, as well as trellises, shepherds hooks and other garden items. Beware of hummers zooming past to reach the many colorful hanging baskets lining the walk.

The Winter Greenhouse staff includes many employees from Winter and the surrounding areas. We take a keen interest in the local community, keeping up active membership in the Winter and Hayward Chambers of Commerce, planting and maintaining a town flower bed, providing plants to the local school and community parks, and providing flowers and produce to the Winter Senior Citizen Center.

In recent years we have developed an enthusiastic and creative landscape design and installation team that will provide assistance through all stages of your project, including follow-up maintenance. No matter how large or how small, whether you have a commercial, residential or recreational site, our professional crew will help turn your landscape from barren into beautiful.

Our selling season begins with a Bareroot Sale which will be held this year on April 22^nd, 23^rd and 24^th. We also have a number of special events throughout the season that feature seminars and workshops, sales, and refreshments.
